Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons sour cream
  • Red and pink food coloring (for icing)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk (for icing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using) until combined.
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients alternately with the sour cream, mixing just until incorporated.
  6. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about ¼-inch thickness and cut into heart shapes using cookie cutters.
  7. Place cookies 1 inch apart on prepared baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are just starting to turn golden.
  9. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  10. For the icing, mix powdered sugar with milk and food coloring until smooth and desired consistency is reached.
  11. Decorate cooled cookies with icing as desired. Let icing set before serving.

Notes

For extra festive cookies, sprinkle with edible glitter or heart-shaped sprinkles before the icing sets.
