  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • Red and pink royal icing or colored sugar for decorating

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Beat in egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract.
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients alternating with buttermilk to form a soft dough.
  6. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  7. Use Valentine-themed cookie cutters to cut shapes and place onto prepared baking sheets.
  8. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until the edges are golden.
  9. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  10. Decorate with royal icing or colored sugar as desired once cooled.

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding a teaspoon of lemon zest to the dough or use colored sanding sugar for a quick decorating option.
