These classic sugar cookies are perfect for any occasion! Soft, chewy, and bursting with buttery sweetness, they’re easy to make and even easier to decorate.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness.
  8. Cut out shapes using cookie cutters.
  9. Place cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  10. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
  11. Let cool on baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. Decorate as desired!

Notes

For extra flavor, add a pinch of almond extract to the dough. Get creative with sprinkles and frosting for a festive touch!
