Close-up of steaming Southern turnip greens

This Southern turnip greens recipe is a comforting classic. Tender turnip greens are slow-cooked with smoked ham hocks for a rich, savory flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds fresh turnip greens, washed and chopped
  • 1 smoked ham hock
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Place the ham hock in a large pot or Dutch oven and cover with chicken broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour.
  2. Add the chopped onion and garlic to the pot and continue to simmer for another 30 minutes.
  3. Add the chopped turnip greens, apple cider vinegar, and red pepper flakes (if using) to the pot.
  4. Stir well and simmer for another 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until the turnip greens are tender.
  5. Remove the ham hock from the pot. Shred the meat from the bone and return it to the pot. Discard the bone and any excess fat.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Serve hot with cornbread or your favorite Southern sides.

Notes

For a richer flavor, add a teaspoon of sugar or a pinch of baking soda while cooking. Serve with hot sauce for an extra kick!
