Southern Fried Cabbage

Southern Fried Cabbage is a quick and easy side dish that’s full of flavor. This simple recipe uses bacon and onions to create a delicious caramelized cabbage that’s perfect alongside any Southern meal.

  • 1 head green cabbage, cored and chopped
  • 4 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Instructions

  1. Cook bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crisp. Remove bacon from skillet and set aside, reserving bacon grease in the skillet.
  2. Add onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
  3. Add chopped cabbage to the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, until cabbage begins to soften, about 10 minutes.
  4. Pour in chicken broth and apple cider vinegar. Stir in sugar, salt, and pepper.
  5. Cover the skillet and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until cabbage is tender.
  6. Stir in butter and cooked bacon. Serve hot.

Notes

For a spicier dish, add a pinch of red pepper flakes during cooking. Serve alongside fried chicken, pork chops, or cornbread.
