  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 2 ounces cream cheese, softened (for frosting)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add egg, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and white vinegar to the butter mixture; mix until combined.
  5. Alternately add the dry ingredients and sour cream to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until edges are set but centers are still soft.
  8. Cool cookies on baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. For the frosting, beat cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
  10. Once cookies are completely cooled, spread cream cheese frosting on top and serve.

Notes

For a festive touch, sprinkle crushed red velvet cake crumbs or red sugar crystals on top of the frosting before serving.
