Limoncello Recipe

Freshly prepared limoncello served chilled

Limoncello is a bright and refreshing Italian lemon liqueur made from zest-infused alcohol and simple syrup, perfect as a digestif or cocktail ingredient.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 10 organic lemons
  • 1 liter pure grain alcohol (or vodka as substitute)
  • 4 cups water
  • 3 cups granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry the lemons thoroughly.
  2. Carefully peel the lemons, avoiding the white pith to prevent bitterness.
  3. Place the lemon peels into a large glass jar and pour the alcohol over them.
  4. Seal the jar tightly and let it steep in a cool, dark place for 10 to 14 days.
  5. After steeping, combine sugar and water in a saucepan and heat until the sugar dissolves to make simple syrup; allow to cool.
  6. Strain the lemon-infused alcohol through a fine mesh or cheesecloth to remove peels.
  7. Mix the infused alcohol with the cooled simple syrup.
  8. Pour the limoncello into sterilized bottles and seal.
  9. Refrigerate or freeze before serving chilled.

Notes

For a smoother flavor, let the limoncello mellow for a few weeks before drinking. Serve chilled in small glasses as a refreshing after-dinner digestif.
