Kashmiri Pink Chai

Homemade Kashmiri Pink Chai served in traditional cup

Kashmiri Pink Chai is a fragrant, milky tea with a unique pink hue, flavored with cardamom and a touch of baking soda, traditionally enjoyed in Kashmir as a soothing and aromatic beverage.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons green tea leaves (preferably Kashmiri or Chinese green tea)
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 4 green cardamom pods, crushed
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped almonds and pistachios (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a pot, boil the water and add the green tea leaves and crushed cardamom pods.
  2. Once it starts boiling, add the baking soda and quickly stir; the tea will turn pink.
  3. Lower the heat and simmer the tea for about 10-15 minutes, until the color deepens and the flavors infuse.
  4. Add the milk and salt, and continue to simmer for another 5 minutes.
  5. Strain the tea into cups.
  6. Garnish with chopped almonds and pistachios if desired and serve hot.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use full-fat milk and serve with traditional Kashmiri naan or biscuits.
