Japanese Yakitori Grilled Chicken

Enjoy tender and flavorful Japanese Yakitori Grilled Chicken skewers, marinated in a savory-sweet sauce and grilled to perfection for a delicious appetizer or main dish.

  • 500g boneless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 8 bamboo skewers, soaked in water for 30 minutes
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 2 tbsp sake
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 2 spring onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix soy sauce, mirin, sake, sugar, garlic, and ginger to create the yakitori sauce.
  2. Thread the chicken pieces onto the soaked bamboo skewers.
  3. Marinate the skewered chicken in half of the sauce for at least 30 minutes in the refrigerator.
  4. Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat.
  5. Place the skewers on the grill and cook for about 3-4 minutes per side, brushing frequently with the remaining sauce, until chicken is cooked through and slightly charred.
  6. Remove from heat and garnish with sliced spring onions and sesame seeds if desired.
  7. Serve hot with steamed rice or as an appetizer.

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding chopped bell peppers or shiitake mushrooms on the skewers before grilling.
