This homemade green bean casserole is a classic comfort dish featuring fresh green beans, creamy mushroom sauce, and crispy fried onions for the perfect holiday side.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed and halved
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Steam the green beans for 5-7 minutes until tender-crisp; drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat and sauté onions and garlic until translucent.
  4. Add mushrooms and cook until they release their moisture and start to brown, about 5 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle flour over the mushroom mixture and stir well to combine.
  6. Gradually whisk in milk and cream, cooking until the sauce thickens, about 3–5 minutes.
  7. Season the sauce with soy sauce, salt, and pepper.
  8. Combine the steamed green beans with the mushroom sauce and half of the crispy fried onions.
  9. Transfer mixture to a greased 9×13 inch baking dish and bake uncovered for 20 minutes.
  10. Remove casserole from oven, sprinkle remaining fried onions on top, and bake an additional 5 minutes until onions are golden and crispy.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a handful of shredded cheddar cheese before the final baking. Serve warm as a delicious side for holiday meals.
