German Potato Soup

Homemade German Potato Soup

This creamy and comforting German Potato Soup is packed with flavor from bacon, onions, and a touch of nutmeg. A hearty and satisfying meal perfect for a chilly day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices bacon, diced
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 4 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, cook the bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, reserving the bacon grease in the pot.
  2. Add the chopped onion to the pot and cook in the bacon grease until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Pour in the chicken broth, add the cubed potatoes, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.
  4. Using an immersion blender, blend the soup until smooth. Alternatively, carefully transfer the soup to a regular blender and blend until smooth, then return it to the pot.
  5. Stir in the milk and heavy cream. Heat through, but do not boil.
  6. Ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with the cooked bacon and fresh parsley. Serve hot.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use smoked bacon. Serve with crusty bread for dipping.
