Frosted Heart Sugar Cookies

Delightfully soft and buttery sugar cookies shaped like hearts, topped with a smooth and colorful frosting, perfect for festive occasions or a sweet treat any time.

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons sour cream
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 3 tablespoons milk (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Food coloring (red or pink, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Beat in egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract if using.
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients, alternating with sour cream, mixing until dough forms.
  6. Roll out dough on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thickness.
  7. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies and place them about 1 inch apart on prepared baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are lightly golden. Let cool completely on wire racks.
  9. For frosting, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add food coloring as desired.
  10. Spread or pipe frosting onto cooled cookies. Allow frosting to set before serving.

Notes

For extra fun, sprinkle colored sugar or edible glitter on the frosting before it sets.
