Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter, for greasing the baking dish
  • Maple syrup, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter and evenly spread the cubed French bread.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  3. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to soak all pieces.
  4. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best results.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove plastic wrap and bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, until the casserole is puffed and golden brown.
  6. Let cool slightly before serving. Drizzle with maple syrup if desired.

Notes

For added texture, sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts on top before baking, or serve with fresh berries for a fruity twist.
