French Toast Bake recipe

This French Toast Bake is a delicious, comforting breakfast casserole featuring custardy bread soaked in a cinnamon-spiced egg mixture, baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of brioche or challah bread, cut into cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Butter, for greasing the baking dish
  • Optional toppings: maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh berries

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and butter a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Place the cubed bread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down slightly to submerge the bread.
  5. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight to allow the bread to soak up the custard.
  6. Bake the casserole covered for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden and the custard is set.
  7. Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes before serving.
  8. Serve warm with optional maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh berries.

Notes

For an extra indulgent touch, sprinkle some chopped nuts or chocolate chips on top before baking, or serve alongside crispy bacon for a savory contrast.
