  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy using an electric mixer.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and beat until combined.
  4. Mix in the sour cream until smooth.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Divide the dough in half, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  8. Roll out one dough disk on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  9. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies and place them about 2 inches apart on prepared sheets.
  10. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until the edges are set but cookies are still soft in the center.
  11. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar before serving.
