Irresistible Homemade Banana Cream Pie

This classic Banana Cream Pie features a flaky crust, creamy banana filling, and a light whipped cream topping. It’s a comforting and delicious dessert perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (9-inch) pre-made graham cracker crust
  • 4 ripe bananas, divided
  • 3 cups milk
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ⅓ cup cornstarch
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 4 large egg yolks, lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • Chocolate shavings, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice 2 bananas and arrange them evenly on the bottom of the graham cracker crust.
  2. In a medium saucepan, whisk together milk, granulated sugar, cornstarch, and salt.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture comes to a simmer and thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat. Gradually whisk a small amount of the hot mixture into the egg yolks to temper them. Then, pour the egg yolk mixture back into the saucepan.
  5. Return to medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute more.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract.
  7. Slice the remaining 2 bananas and gently fold them into the custard.
  8. Pour the banana cream filling over the bananas in the crust.
  9. Cover the pie with plastic wrap, pressing it directly onto the surface to prevent a skin from forming. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  10. In a chilled bowl, beat heavy cream, powdered sugar, and a pinch of salt until stiff peaks form.
  11. Spread whipped cream evenly over the chilled pie.
  12. Garnish with chocolate shavings, if desired.
  13. Slice and serve chilled.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use whole milk and substitute half of the milk with heavy cream. You can also add a layer of chocolate ganache under the bananas for a chocolate-banana cream pie.
