This Baked Cheesy Dumpling Casserole features tender dumplings baked in a rich, creamy cheese sauce—perfect for a comforting family dinner.

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix milk and egg, then combine with dry ingredients until just blended to form dumpling batter.
  4. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat and sauté garlic until fragrant.
  5. Add whole milk and heavy cream, warming gently; stir in cheddar and Parmesan cheese until melted and smooth to create cheese sauce.
  6. Optional: Stir cooked chicken and parsley into the cheese sauce; season with black pepper and paprika.
  7. Pour half of the cheese sauce into the casserole dish.
  8. Drop spoonfuls of dumpling batter evenly over the sauce layer.
  9. Pour the remaining cheese sauce over the dumplings.
  10. Bake uncovered for 30–35 minutes, or until dumplings are cooked through and top is golden and bubbly.
  11. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, sprinkle additional grated Parmesan and fresh herbs on top before baking, and serve with a side of steamed vegetables or a crisp green salad.
