Applesauce Cake

A moist and flavorful applesauce cake combining warm spices and tender apples, perfect for a comforting dessert or snack.

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×9 inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flours, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter with granulated and brown sugars until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
  6. Fold in the applesauce and nuts if using, mixing until evenly incorporated.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  8. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before serving.

Notes

For a richer cake, try adding a cream cheese frosting or serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
